Events
• Rev. John Keep arrived in Homer in 1821 from Blanford, , Massachusetts, USA. 2733
• "In May, 1821, he received a call from the church at Homer, N. Y,,
and also a call from the church in Brunswick, Maine, the latter
included "teacher of moral philosophy and preacher in Bowdoin Col-
lege." He accepted the call from Homer. The church membership of
four hundred and congregation of six hundred was scattered over an
area of ten miles square. In addition to his other ministerial duties
he maintained for five years prior to leaving the charge five Bible
classes in different localities and in attending these classes it is stated
that only in one instance did he fail to meet the class promptly at the
appointed time. During his twelve years pastorate there were five hun-
dred added to the church membership. Soon after settling in Homer he
was chosen a trustee of the academy and afterward was president of the
board. Through his efforts a department for ladies was added to the
academy and the attendance greatly increased. He was elected a
trustee of Auburn Theological Seminary, and also of Hamilton College
located at Clinton, N. Y. At Homer as at Blandford under his leader-
ship the church took strong ground for temperance.

In 1833 he tendered his resignation to the church in Homer, having
before him two calls, one to an agency in New England of the Ameri-
can Colonization Society and the other from a church in Cleveland,
Ohio. He chose the latter and was for one year pastor of the Stone
church, now the First Presbyterian church."

• "HON. JOHN MARTIN KEEP (Gen. Martin, Capt. Caleb, John, Samnel, John), born at Homer, N. Y., January 26, 1813. After attending the district schools and the academy at Cortland, he entered Hamilton College in 1832, from which institution he graduated in 1836. While attending college he was one of the first members of the Alpha Delta Phi society there. In 1837 he began the study of law with Augustus Donnelly at Homer, N. Y., and then studied under Horatio Seymour at Buffalo. He was admitted to the bar at Westfield, N. Y. In 1839 he married Cornelia A. Reynolds, of Westfield, N. Y. She was born May 4, 1820. Soon after his marriage he removed to Rockton, 111., where he remained until 1844 when he settled at Beloit, Wis. In addition to his practice of law he was agent for large tracts of land and was engaged in various railroad enterprises. In 1848 he was elected district attorney. Such was his popularity that in 1856 he was elected judge of the first judicial district by 6,483 majority. His devo- tion to the work of his office and exposure in connection with looking after real estate matters so itnpaired his health that he was obliged to resign the judgeship, his resignation taking effect August 17, 1858. He died at Beloit, March 2, 1861. He was a member of the Congregational church, having united with the church at Homer when but sixteen years old. In politics he was first a whig and then a republican. Judge Keeii was a man of excessive energy, ready decision^ superior judg- ment, indomitable will, great moral courage, combined with a chari- table disposition and a dignified yet graceful manner. On the morning he died he was dressed and seated in his easy chair looking over papers, etc., and after taking leave separately of each of his familj', though his pulse had ceased to beat he was not ready to die, as he waited the arrival of his sister, Mrs. Graham, from Janesville. Looking out of the v.indow and noting the arrival of the train he said, " I fear she has not come," but still watching the window a moment later he said, "Indeed she has come." After a few minutes' conversation with her he said, "I am ready to depart," and soon expired. His wife survived till April 2, 1896.
