• "ABIGAIL KEEP (Gen. Martin, Capt. Caleb, John, Samuel, John), born at Homer, N. Y., March 15, 1818. In September, 1842, she married Alexander Graham, then of Homer. He was born in 1816, reared on a farm, taught school and read law. Soon after their marriage they removed to Schuyler county, N. Y., where he owned a large farm on which they lived until 1857. In 1843 and 1844 he was superintendent of schools and was supervisor in 1845. In 1851 he was elected to the state legislature and served as a member of the committee on canals. He cast his first vote for William Henry Harrison and in July, 1S54, he was a member of the convention at Syracuse that organ- ized the republican party in the state of New York, In 1858 he removed to Janesville, Wis., where he was a stockholder in the First National Bank, in the Harris Reaper Manufacturing Company, and in the Janes- ville Cotton Manufacturing Company. During the civil war, although he was past military age, he sent a man in his stead to the army. In 1861 he was elected to the state legislature and was chairman of the committee on banks and banking. In 1870 he was again chosen to the legislature and was the author of the law passed known as the Graham liquor law. From 1864 to 1872 inclusive he served as an alderman in Janesville. In 1872 Mr. Graham removed to Cedar Falls, Iowa, and engaged in the milling business. In 1879 he went to Utah and was superintendent of the Tintic Mining Company, removing in 18S7 to Austin, Nevada, where he was general manager of the Manhattan Mining and Reduction Company. In 1890 he returned to Janesville, Wis., where he died in May, 1895. Mrs. Abigail Keep Graham died at Janesville, Wis., in October, 1897."

• "ALBERT KEEP (Hon. Chauncey, Capt. Caleb, John, Samuel, John), born at Homer, N. Y., April 30, 1826. When fifteen years of age he became a clerk in a country store, remaining there for five years. In 1846 he went to Whitewater, Wis., where he became a member of the firm of Peck, Keep & Company, engaged in mercantile business at that place. The business was quite successful and was con- tinued until 1851 when it was sold. The firm reorganized in that year in Chicago, Ill., and engaged in the wholesale dry goods business which was successfully continued until 1857, when the stock was disposed of and the business closed. Mr. Keep then gave his whole attention to real estate, his investments in which were quite profitable. In 1865 he was elected a director of the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroad Company and continued as such for eighteen years. On June 20, 1873, he was elected president of the Chicago & Northwestern Railway Com- pany. During his presidency the road was greatly extended and became one of the most important roads in the country. He continued as president fourteen years, until 1887, since which time he has been chair- man of the board of directors, which position he still occupies. Mr. Keep has been a director of the Merchants' Loan & Trust Com- pany, of Chicago, for about twelve years. He organized the Chicago Home for Incurables, being executor of the will of Clarissa C. Peck, who left a large endowment for its establishment and maintenance. He is also a trustee of the John Crerar Library and of the McCormick Theological Seminary. Mr. Keep married (1st) April 6, 1853, Susan A. Williams; she died November 29, 1859; no children. (2d) September 3, 1861, Harriet S. Gunn and they had one daughter.

and 1794.

About 1797 he disposed of his property in Monson and removed to
Homer, N. Y., where he died October 6, 1816. His wife died at Homer
in September, 1803.

• He had a residence. 1155 "Daniel Knapp, older brother of Stephen, erected a dwelling house on the north part [p. 192] of the farm and near the four corners of the road at the cemetery, which he opened afterward as a tavern and kept it as such for several years. The succeeding residents of this farm were Chauncey Keep, Mr. Dickson, and General Martin Keep, who bought the property about 1824 and resided there ten years, removing to Tompkins county. The farm has since been owned by Walter Jewett, and by Paris Barber, who sold the grounds of the cemetery to the association. With the exception of twenty acres on the east side of the road, the farm is now and has been for some time owned by Henry Dennison."

Prudence., daughter of Parmenio and Mary Wolcott. She was born
May, 1789, and died November 28, 1869. Mrs. Prudence Keep was a
direct descendant of Hon. Roger Wolcott one of the Colonial
Governors of Connecticut.

Chauncey Keep resided at Homer, N. Y. He was one of the first
Trustees of Cortland Academy in 1S19. In politics he was a Whig and
was elected a member of the State legislature in 1830 and again in
1836. He died at Homer, October 12, 1853.

His son, Andrew Dickson White, born at Homer, N. Y.,
November 7, 1S32, graduated from Yale in 1S53. He then
spent two years in travel in Europe, and returning home was
professor of History and English Literature in the Universitj-
of Michigan, 1S57 '° 1S62. In 1S62 and 1864 was elected to the
State Senate in New York. In 1S67 became first president of
Cornell University serving till 1SS5, when he retired on account
of ill health. In January, 1871, he was a member of the com-
mission from United States to Santo Domingo. In October,
1871, was chairman of the Republican convention of New
York. He served as United States Minister to Germany from
1S79 to 1881. In 1SS7 he endowed the school of history and
political science in Cornell University with a librarv of over
30,000 volumes at a cost of over $100,000. He has published a
number of books. At present (189S) Mr. White is Ambassador
from the United States to Germany."

• "HENRY KEEP (Hon. Chauncey, Capt. Caleb, John, Samuel, John), born at Homer, N. Y., October 28, 1820. He attended the academy at Homer, N. Y., and afterward Union College, Schenectady, N. Y., from which institution he graduated in 1839. After leaving college he removed to Jamestown, Chautauqua county, N. Y., and began the stud}' of law; he afterward practiced several years in Fredonia, N. Y. In 1845 he removed to Whitewater, Wis., and engaged in mercantile business until 1851, when he opened a wholesale dry goods business in Chicago in connection with his partners. Philander Peck and his brother, Albert Keep. He did not remove to Chicago, however, until 1855. In 1857 he sold out his business in Chicago, and thereafter was never engaged in active busi- ness. He was a member of the Episcopal church, and while residing on Washington boulevard attended the cathedral at the corner of Washington boulevard and Peoria street. For many years before his death, however, he was a member of Grace Episcopal church, and dur- ing a portion of the time was one of the wardens. He died at his resi- dence, No. 2014 Michigan avenue, May 4, 1897. He married May 5, 1846, Phebe McCluer, daughter of Maj. Orrin McCluer, of Fredonia, N. Y. She died November 15, 1896. CHILDREN.

• "HEPSIBETH KEEP (Gen.Martin, Capt. Caleb, John, Sam- uel, John), born at Homer, N. Y., September 25, 1809. She married at Homer May 23, 1830, Phineas Bennet. In 1837 they removed to New York City. Mr. Bennet was a very successful inventor. Among other things he invented the following: a method of generating steam for the steam engine; a device for cutting off the steam from the piston chamber to obviate the necessity of injecting cold water into the chamber to condense the steam; an invention for generating gas from coal or wood: a device for raising sunken vessels; an air brake which was afterwards modified and used by the Westinghouse Company. Mr. Bennet was also the inventor of the noted American automaton chess player. He removed to Burdette, N. Y., where he died March 25, 1S59. Mrs. Hepsibeth (Keep) Bennet died at Burdette January 18, 1874.
