HASKINS.--In the journal of our Conference for the year 1885 may be found the memoir of the Rev. M. Z. Haskins who died in Cincinnatus, New York October 16, 1884 two days after the adjournment of Conference and of his reappointment as pastor at Cincinnatus. His age was forty-one. Fifty-three years later we now record the translation of his widow, Mrs. Mary Fox Haskins, who died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Mercy Haskins Haight in Binghamton, New York, August 1, 1938 at the age of ninety-one. Between these two dates lie more than fifty years of earnest Christian living and service. Mrs. Haskins was born in the Methodist parsonage at Tully, New York, January 18, 1847, being the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Wesley Fox. Her father gave over forty years to the gospel ministry. In October 1865, she was married to Major Z. Haskins in Keeney Settlement. She and her husband began their labors in the itinerant ministry in 1871 when he was appointed to the Union Valley, Taylor, Taylor Center and Linclaen Charge. This was fifty-seven years before their grandson, Rev. Kenmore Wesley Haight became Supply Pastor on this his very first appointment. The following Charges were served successfully after this: East Homer, New Woodstock, Preble, McGrawville and Cincinnatus. He remained the full term permitted at that time in every Charge save the last one where he died. Two children were born, both of whom survive her: George Haskins live in Cincinnatus and is a well-known layman of our Conference and Mrs. Mercy Haskins Haight lives in Binghamton. There are six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The funeral was held in Binghamton and was in charge of the writer. Burial was made in Homer by the side of her husband. For some years Mrs. Haskins made her home in Homer. From 1889 when her father died until 1914 when her mother finished her earthly life at the age of one hundred, Mrs. Haskins cared tenderly for her mother. during this time I was her pastor for six years, and I gladly pay tribute to the serenity of her life, her interest in the church, and her confidence in God. I quote, as equally applicable to Mrs. Haskins the closing words of Mrs. Fox's memoir, "Her days among us were as a benediction; her going was as a quiet psalm of trust and serene confidence in God." Events
• John Frasier came to Homer from Pomfret, Windham County, Connecticut, USA. 33
• "About a mile from Mr. Butterfield, John Frazier settled on a small farm on lot 36, in 1803. He was born in 1749 in England, entered the country's service, or, rather was dragged from his bed and forced to enlist under the banner of King George, and served in the army of General Burgoyne; he remained in the same division until the battle of Stillwater, and the surrender of his army to General Gates, in October, 1777. At that time he escaped from the service, and subsequently reached Pomfret, Connecticut, where he was employed by General Putnam. There he was married in 1799, and removed to Homer, as stated. [p. 195] He thought to make sure of a valid title to his land by paying for it; but he failed in this and paid for it a second time, and his title being disputed, he actually paid for a portion of it the third time, and even then was forced to abandon it altogether; he died in the alms house in 1839. This incident will give the reader an idea of the trouble arising out of early land titles on the military tract, as narrated in the preceding history of that tract.
When Mr. Frazier came in from Pomfret he drove seven cows for Samuel Griggs, who came at the same time and located on lot 38. He was a prominent farmer; was president of the first agricultural society in 1822, and very active in the construction of the Albany turnpike through Cortland county. He removed to Cayuga county in 1829 or 1830, where he died." 2206
