• Biography: 154 "Asaph H. Carpenter, Homer, was the son of Noah Carpenter, deceased, late of Homer. His early ancestors emigrated from England in the fore part of the eighteenth century, and settled in the town of Rehoboth, in Massachusetts. Noah Carpenter, the father of the subject of this narrative, was the youngest of eighteen children, his father having had two wives, by each of whom he had nine children, the last wife being sister of Colonel Ethan Allen, of Revolutionary fame. Asaph was born on the 20th of June, 1800. October 3, 1826, he was married to Miss Almira Clark, formerly of Ashford, Connecticut, who has been to him a loving wife, to her children a kind mother, and of the church and society a useful member. The issue from this marriage has been eight children, five of whom survive. Two sons were in the Union army in the war of the Rebellion. One, named William W. Carpenter, was mortally wounded in the battle of Gettysburg, after being in the service about a year. Daniel W. Carpenter was in the service four years, and was severely wounded at the second battle of Bull Run, from which he has recovered. Another of those who died was his oldest daughter, who was an energetic, useful lady, and died, after long and severe suffering, at the age of forty-three, much respected and lamented. His oldest son, Francis B. Carpenter, is an artist of wide celebrity, who painted the celebrated Emancipation Proclamation, three United States Presidents, one Governor of a State, Lieutenant-Governor, United States Senators, and other distinguished personages, and is now engaged in painting a full-length portrait of President Lincoln, to be placed in the new capitol in Albany. He is widely known as a distinguished artist in America, and in many other parts of the world.
Mr. Carpenter is now in the enjoyment of good health for one of his age, has always been a resident of Homer, and has uniformly sustained the reputation of integrity and useful citizenship. He is valued member of the Congregational Church, to which he has long been attached."
• He had a residence in Homer, Cortland County, New York, USA. 1638 "Noah Carpenter came in from Pomfret, Windham county, Connecticut and located on lot 16, north of the village. His son, Asaph H. Carpenter, was born during the journey of his parents from the East. He lived on the parental homestead until his death recently. Francis B. Carpenter, one of the eminent artists of the country, and a resident of New York city, is a son of A. H. Carpenter."
• Asaph was a member of the Congregational Church 1639
• Find-A-Grave: 53697547. 1636
• His obituary was published. 1636 "Died. CARPENTER - In Homer, N.Y., Oct. 18, 1882, Asaph H. CARPENTER, aged 82 years.

(Published in the Cortland Democrat, 20 Oct 1882 edition)

Mr. Asaph CARPENTER, one of the oldest residents of this place died last Wednesday from the effects of a stroke of paralysis. The funeral services were held at the house on Friday at 2 P.M. Rev. Wm. A. ROBINSON officiating. His remains were carried to Glenwood cemetery for interment. Mr. CARPENTER was brought into this town from the East during the year 1800, when he was a mere infant, or as he frequently expressed it was brought in "on a pillow." He has been a continuous resident for 82 years. He was an honest, genial, and upright man, a sincere and true christian, having been a member of the Congregational church for many years. He will be mourned by his many relatives and friends."
